The town of Methow is an unincorporated community in Okanogan County on State Route 153. It is a great place for people who want to enjoy the beauty of the North Cascades and the National Park year-round. This is the "dry side" of the Cascades with pine forests dotting the foothills and over 250 days of sunshine each year.

Real estate in Methow includes ranches and farms nestled below the rugged alpine peaks. Methow has a population of about 250, although there are about 2,000 people living in the general area.

Methow and the other valley communities are beautiful places in Washington State for both visitors and residents.

Dining and shopping

Although the town of Methow does not have a restaurant, there are a number of fine restaurants and shops in this summer resort area. Firestone Dining in Mazama and Hank's Deli in Twisp are popular eateries. The Cinnamon Twisp Bakery serves a variety of coffees with their tasty baked goods. Further south in Pateros, Rivers Restaurant is also a popular choice.

Shopping for locally made handicrafts is another popular pastime. A prime example is the Cowgirl Candle Company which sells locally made candles throughout the Methow Valley. Methow Made is a campaign promoting products and companies local to the Methow Valley, including local grocers, coffee roasters, and breweries.

Recreation

Methow Valley was made for recreation and Methow sits right in the middle. Just south of the Okanogan National Forest, which extends to the Canadian border, Methow real estate includes Loup Loup Ski Bowl with alpine skiing and Nordic skiing on 23 kilometers of trails.

The Methow Valley Sport Trails Association maintains 120 miles of groomed Nordic ski trails. This is one of the largest cross-country areas in the United States. Thirty-five miles of the trails allow dog access and three of the warming hits allow dogs to overnight with their masters.

The Mazama Trails are good for beginners as well as experienced cross-country skiers. The Sun Mountain and Rendezvous Trails offer steeper terrain. All trails link to the Community Trail that runs about 30 kilometers from Mazama down to Winthrop. The Community Trail is marked as an easy run for all levels of skiers.

Winter sports are also available at the Winthrop Ice and Sports Rink in the neighboring community.

Sun Mountain Lodge is a major resort in Washington State located in nearby Winthrop. Activities include enjoying 3,000 acres of private wilderness, the private 120-acre Patterson Lake, and spectacular mountain views. Horseback riding, fly fishing, and hiking are some of the summer activities.

Living

Methow real estate includes country living with large three and four bedroom homes on acreage near the river. This is also the place for people to invest in property for building their dream home or the cabin in the woods.

The original Methow store is located just off of SR153 on Main Street across the street from the first stone house in the area and an old schoolhouse. There is a small post office, county fire department, and church. This small town on the Methow River is about 13 miles northwest of its confluence with the Columbia River below Grand Coulee Dam.

Schools, Health, and Transportation

Home schooling is common in the Methow area in collaboration with the Methow Valley School District. The district's REACH program works with parents and students to provide access to state requirements.

The district also has an Independent Learning Center and it works with the Puget Sound Consortium of School Innovation. Classes are offered to high school students in building and construction the industry is a major source of jobs in the Methow Valley.

Class sizes are small in the Methow Valley Elementary School and the Liberty Bell Junior-Senior High School.

Residents of Methow and other valley communities have medical services in Winthrop. There is a Country Clinic and the Methow Institute of Sports Traumatology for orthopedic medicine. MIST helps athletes recover from sports injuries using the most modern technology and treatments.

The Methow Valley is the eastern access to the North Cascades Highway, State Route 20 that is open from early April to November based on snowfall. Methow is part of the Cascade Loop, one of the most scenic routes in the Evergreen State. While SR 20 is closed, access to Methow real estate is from Wenatchee via Highway 97 past Lake Chelan north along the Columbia River.

Heading west from Spokane, Highway 2 connects to State Route 174 at Grand Coulee Dam where the road leads to the Methow Valley and river. This road stays open all year.
